Meat and Fish and Catholics and Fridays!
April 7th 2007 20:28
If you ask a Catholic a question you may not get the answer you want. The second three questions about fish, Lent and meat is an interesting one. It seems odd to one who remembers fish being a staple Catholic food on Fridays, not just during Lent.
When I attended college there was a professor who spoke animately about the Catholic ban on meat on Fridays and why fish made a great substitute. His story was that a certain Pope's relative was a fisherman. Fisherman couldn't compete with other meats, so the Pope declared a day where Catholics would consume fish. Although it was once on all Fridays, it soon became only on Fridays during Lent.
True or not, I somehow agree more with the professor than the faithful Catholic version.

I'm glad the Catholic Church banned meat on Fridays ...
I enjoy chilli & garlic prawns on a bed of steamed rice, a few dozen oysters, lobster thermidor and baked snapper with Asian greens for dinner ...

Your professor's version is amusing. Really....a pope using his position for personal gain? Surely not.
Love & stuff
