Social Denial

Contrary to popular beliefs, many addicts can hide their addiction. I work with somebody who admitted that they are an alcoholic, and claim that contrary to popular beliefs, he doesn't miss days or comes in late to work because he needs to feed his addiction. So he is basically a 'functioning' addict.
It never ceases to amaze me when people die tragically and families dismiss toxicology reports from autopsies that their loved ones were addicts. Billy Mays' family denies cocaine use as does the family of the women involved in a tragic wrong-way crash deny alcohol and pot use.
I can see loved ones trying to disbelieve that tragic deaths are anything but addiction related, but many people lead a secret life. Denial makes people want to know more than they should and if the truth comes out, be prepared to accept it.
